I have gotten realy into the 7 years war, and would like to make some paper minis for it, the uniforms I get but the flags are confusing
regiments seemed to have 2 waving at the same time (from what Ive seen)
does anyone have some links or iamges of a good generic flag set per a country (not regiment specific)
Ive looked online on that flag site and such, its confusing as I dont realy know what exactly Im looking for..
bascily I need the war flags of
Prussia
England
Germany
France
and
Russia
for the 7 years war.. _________________

To quote from the SYW thread, regarding Prussia:
| Quote: |
| One was the leibfahne (King's colour) and the other the Regimentsfahne (so similar to the British) - the following link will take you to a site which explains things more and gives a few examples: http://tmg110.tripod.com/prussia1.htm |
Also, it's always good to see more enthusiasm for the SYW. |

Problem is that the very concept of a national or war flag existed only much later ;) The only area were such a concept was already used in the 18th century were the maritime nations. If a ship was about to enter a harbour, it was interesting were it came from. On the batte field on land it was of less interest to be able to be known by others, it was more important that the different members of military corps (regiments, bataillons etc), i.e the soldiers, did know where they belonged to. So a finer grained symbolic, based on regiments, evolved. This was even more so in that the 18th century the concept of a national / state army evolved. Before the miliatry units were independent and lead by their officers (up to a colonel I think).
The system of a Regimentsfahne / regimental colour which was different to the Leibfahne / king's colour belonged to this system. The regimental colour was choosen by the regimental chief, while the king's colour showed the allegiance of the unit.
> Prussia
The normal regimenal flags applied, with a similar pattern and different colours. For maritime purposes a white flag wit a black (heraldic) eagle could be chosen.

> England
The miltary unit used a combination of union flag (before I think 1801 it was a combination of the flags of England (a red cross on white) and Scotland (a white saltire on blue), which was the base of the king's colour, and a plaint flags with some symbols (colonel's badges, battle honours etc), with the union flag in the canton (the uper hoist part)

> Germany
German did not exist at this time, there only exist a couple of independent states (kingdoms, electorates, baronies etc). The emperor was powerless, a possible flag used by imperial troups (as much as he could muster), was yellow with a black double headed eagle. This was a flag which was used at land, I don't think there existed imperial ships (seafaring was done by independent cities, like Hamburg, Bremen etc)

> France
Maritime flag was white resp blue with either three or many fleur-de-lys (heraldic lilies). This was also used as a kind of king's colour, I think.

> Russia
Maritime flag was white with a blue saltire, which was not used on land as far as I know.

I assume you've been to warflag.com. It shows 2 flags for many of the regiments, which is correct as explained above, but most gamers use only one--generally whichever is more attractive. _________________ Chris Johnson
